| Dissemination
of improved sweet potato varieties and technologies
for processing, storage and utilisation among smallholder
farmers in Homabay District, Kenya. |
 |
| Bread
made from Sweet Potato flour |
Started in September
2002 in Rangwe, Homabay District, the project is
implemented by the Community Mobilisation for Desertification
(C-MAD) in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture,
the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI),
the Kenya Industrial Research And Development Institute
(KIRDI) and four CBOs from the area.
Through the project, farmers including women’s
groups are being facilitated to do rapid multiplication
of improved (Vitamin A-rich) orange-fleshed sweet
potato varieties and to set up local bulking and
distribution centres. They are also learning other
economical and environment-friendly ways of using
sweet potatoes.
For example, one prolific group in Rangwe known
as the Kinda Women Group, has since 2003 been involved
in the processing and production of novel sweet
potato bakery products. These include composite
flour for making weaning foods. The group has successfully
established two processing centers, two motorized
mills and two bakeries that produce bread, cakes,
mandazis, chapatti and biscuits.
A modern bakery at Kinda has capacity to bake 5000
loaves a day. The Kinda women enterprises in Homabay
District continue to register tremendous economic
success for the group members and their families.
Members are working to develop certified standards
of their products in order to penetrate lucrative
high-value markets.

The
SPK 004, or Kakamega
is one of thevitamin A-rich varieties
promoted in Homa bay District. |
The
SPK 013, is a local white flesh variety. |
The orange fleshed sweet potato varieties are very
nutritious. A fresh 100g of this variety is reported
to contain
quite a number of nutrients.
The table below serves to illustrate this.
