PROJECT PROFILE: Buganda Cultural Development Foundation (BUCADEF)
Tissue Culture bananas in Uganda
A farmer (left) showing off a healthy banana crop to a visitor.
The project started in September 2002 and aims to promote banana tissue culture technology in Mubende and Kiboga districts and in that way attempt to restore profitable banana production in the area.

Its partnership arrangement involves the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF) who are demonstrating the technology, Agro Genetics Company Ltd, who are supplying the banana tissue culture materials, the National Research Organisation (NARO) Kawanda, who are providing backstopping on post-harvest technologies and the Ministry of Agriculture who are providing extension advice and sites for setting up hardening nurseries.

The project has created a lot of excitement from farmers in the project areas, many of whom are now asking for planting materials.
